Through March 10, 2008
Titus Theater 1 Lobby Gallery, T1
Titus Theater 2 Lobby Gallery, T2, New York, NY, USA

Painted or printed images on glass were among the earliest forms of projected "motion picture" entertainment. Mechanical glass slides were manipulated to simulate various kinds of change in the image, and multiple projectors allowed for superimposed and dissolving views. Experimental media artist Ernie Gehr's Panoramas of the Moving Image (2005) is a synchronized five-channel video installation that uses eighty-seven original slides and views selected from Gehr's personal collection and that of renowned pre-cinema collector David Francis.

The International Survey of Library & Museum Digitization Projects

The International Survey of Library & Museum Digitization Projects, published by Primary Research Group, presents detailed data about the management and development of more than 100 special collection and museum digitization programs from libraries and museums in the United States, Canada, Australia, Italy, the UK and other countries.

The report presents data and narrative on funding, collaboration, outsourcing, staffing, technology selection, digital asset management, cataloging, copyright clearance, impact of digitization on preservation medium and other issues of interest to libraries and museums that are digitizing aspects of their collections.

Just a few of the report's many findings are that:

  • More than 60% of the funding for the projects in the sample is derived from the library budget itself.
  • More than 53% of the organizations have teamed up with another department or faculty to work jointly on a digitization project.
  • Nearly 49% of the organizations in the sample outsource some form of digitization, in whole or in part, to an outside party. Museums were more likely than other organizations to do this kind of outsourcing; more than 61% of the museums in the sample outsourced.
  • Institutions had a mean of 4.43 individuals who spent at least part of their working day on digitization projects, with a maximum of 20.
  • Organizations spent a mean of $21,839 on equipment to duplicate, record, photograph, scan or transform content into digital formats.
  • Photographic-intensive projects were more likely to describe themselves as being deficient in mastering digitization skills; more than 31% of these organizations said they had a great deal to learn.
  • 17.7% of the organizations license or rent use of any aspect of their digital collection to outside parties.

Heritage Health Index Summary Report
>>>

The Heritage Health Index Report is the first comprehensive survey ever conducted of the condition and preservation needs of our nation's collections. The project was conceived and implemented by the nonprofit organization Heritage Preservation, in partnership with the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Over 4.8 billion artifacts are held in public trust by more than 30,000 archives, historical societies, libraries, museums, scientific research collections, and archaeological repositories in the United States. These artifacts embody the richness and diversity of our heritage and include rare books and manuscripts, photographs, documents, sound recordings, moving images, digital materials, art, historic and ethnographic objects, archaeological artifacts, and natural science specimens. A Public Trust At Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America's Collections examines the current condition of – and potential risks to – these collections.
